The ensemble was formed in 1996 by American guitarist Ry Cooder and Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González. Their aim was to revive the traditional sounds of pre-revolutionary Cuba, bringing together some of the island's most talented and seasoned musicians. The resulting self-titled album, "Buena Vista Social Club," released in 1997, achieved international acclaim and won a Grammy Award, propelling the group to global fame.
